31 Day Salute is a month-long celebration of performances, ceremonies, exhibits and activities where we invite the world to do what the Fayetteville community does every day — show our enthusiastic appreciation, respect and support for those who serve and have served in our armed forces. Put on by the entire community, 31 Day Salute is for anyone who wants to experience our military heritage and honor our brethren in the services — past and present. As part of this salute to our military, the Museum of the Cape Fear is hosting a military history lecture series:
2 — 6:30 p.m. — War of 1812 Gunboats —
The first in a series of three lectures, held in conjunction with 31 Day Salute, Jim Greathouse, a member of North Carolina’s War of 1812 Bicentennial Committee, will provide a PowerPoint presentation about three Jeffersonian gunboats that were built in Smithville (now Southport), NC: gunboats 166, 167, & one 168. 9 — 6:30 p.m. — Red, White, Blue, & Black: A History of Black Americans in the United States Military —
The second in a series of three lectures in conjunction with 31 Day Salute, Charles Anderson, Jr., Adjunct Professor with Methodist University, examines the role played by African Americans in the history of the United States military. FREE!
14 — 10:00 — Preschool Pals —
Preschool program for ages 3 to 5. Children make crafts, play games, hear a story, or sing a song. The program is free but registration is requested so staff can provide plenty of materials. To register, and for more information, call the museum at 910-486-1330. FREE!
16 — 6:30 p.m. — Pearl Harbor: The Imperial Japanese Navy's "Flawed" Victory —
Jason Wetzel, staff historian with the Office of Army Reserve History, Headquarters – United States Army Reserve, will speak about the amazing blunders of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Mr Wetzel will provide a detailed look at "lessons learned" from the attack on our
Pacific Fleet on December 7th, 1941. Real surprises are revealed. Wetzel states “It could have been a lot worse, why?” For more information please call 910-486-1330. FREE!

8 — 11-4 — 2nd Saturdays Arts Fest —
A variety of artists and craftspeople will set up shop on the grounds of the 1897 Poe House to display and sell local handmade crafts and creations. Vendors include jewelers, potters, basket makers, and handmade soaps and candles. Big Ed’s Creek Sauce and Catering will have BBQ sandwiches for sale, and Mike’s Tropical Gourmet Icees will be on hand to keep everyone cool. Admission to the event is free, but come prepared to shop. In addition to the vendors, textile historian and conservator Lynn Gorges will host a “Bound Signature Quilt Block Workshop” on from 1:00-4:00 pm. A registration fee of $40 includes the class and materials, pre-registration is recommended as space is limited. Download the Registration Form Here. 24-28 — 9-12 Daily — Summer History Camp —
This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the museum’s annual summer history camp for ages 9 to 12. Campers will participate in activities from the last 20 years of the camp. Previous themes of the camp included archaeology (from 1994), World War II (from 1995, the 50th anniversary), transportation (from 1997), the 100th anniversary of flight (from 2003), and many more years from which staff will draw from for a week-long camp of fun and learning. Cost is $25. Registration must take place in person with payment in full and proof of the child’s age.
