The Spirits of Bad Men Made Perfect

Saturday, April 25, 2020 - 2:00pm

This presentation and discussion will focus on how the Confederacy managed to re-write the history of rebellion in North Carolina and throughout the nation, creating a new narrative now known as the ‘Lost Cause’. Using primary sources and first-hand witness accounts, we’ll look at the origin of the first monuments placed in Virginia and North Carolina, their initial purpose, and how their story has changed over the decades to embrace a manufactured mythology of southern righteousness. Finally, we’ll examine the role these monuments (and the Lost Cause mythos supporting them) play in today’s political climate and who – precisely – is defending their presence in our public places; and why that defense should prompt a larger public discussion about the role of Confederate iconography in society.
