History To-Go: World War II
When WWII began for America, North Carolinians jumped into action - literally! 362,500 North Carolinians served during WWII, and the state became home to many new and temporary military bases where over 2 million service members were trained. Established bases like Fort Bragg expanded quickly, and garnered new units like the 82nd Airborne, the first airborne unit in the army. The 82nd Airborne jumped into Normandy on D-Day and continued to fight in Europe until the end of the war. Along the coast servicemembers and civilians kept an eye out for enemy planes, ships, and submarines. Across the state women worked together to raise money for soldiers, grow victory gardens so that more food could been sent to troops overseas, and fill jobs left by men that were drafted.
February's "History To-Go" box features World War II! You can come by the museum starting Tuesday, February 7, 2023 to pick up a box (limit 2 per family). Limited supplies, so come early! You can select the links below to access the box contents if you cannot get to the museum to pick yours up!
